Gertrude Copeland is a member of the class of 75 of Lane College. A Jackson native attending the schools of Jackson and a member of the first graduating class of Jackson Central Merry High School. Lane College has always been her passion as a child attended many summer programs and that’s where her love for Fair Lane begins. After graduating from Lane with a B.S.Degree in Health, Physical Education and Biology she began her journey as a teacher where she knew she would touch the lives of children. She has been a Physical Education teacher for 50 years. She is a playwriter she has written and direct plays for her various schools and church during Black History Month. Under the leadership of Professor Mack T. Barnett, she became involved with the LCNAA. she has served as both president and vice president of her local chapter and worked on various committees within the local and national Chapter. During Homecoming she tries to make sure that all alumni are welcome back to celebrate during our Welcome Home Dance. Gertrude is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority along with the Society of African American Culture An outgoing person, one can say she is the same most of the times, when you see her, helpful trying makes sure with other alumni and friends that Lane College will always be The Beacon on the Hill.
